It is impossible to imagine Black Widow being played by any actress other than Scarlett Johansson. But, apparently, she was not the first choice of Marvel Studios and was about to not get the role.
Scarlett Johansson has won the hearts of all Marvel fans by playing Black Widow. It is impossible to think about the character and not associate it with the face of the famous actress. But, as she recently revealed, she came very close to not playing Natasha Romanoff.
During an interview, Scarlett Johansson revealed that she almost didn’t play Black Widow and that the role was intended for Emily Blunt. But luck was on her hand, because Blunt did not accept the character due to problems in her schedule and because she thought that female roles in superhero movies are undervalued and only seen as “the girlfriend of the guy who saves the world.”. At first, Scarlett Johansson was very disappointed to find out that she was not the first on the list, “Life went on. I have had enough experience of rejection,” she told Variety.
But when Emily Blunt decided not to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, Scarlett jumped at the chance. The big factor that ended up deciding that she would keep the role, was the acceptance from Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige. The actress fits perfectly with the personal vision of both. I ran into Jon again, and we had a fun conversation about how he hadn’t chosen me. But I was excited. I was so excited,” she revealed.
In the interview, Scarlett Johansson also talked about the new solo movie that she is preparing for her character. Which, according to her, gave her the closure she needed for Natasha after Avengers: Endgame.
“It’s a film about self-forgiveness and it’s a film about family. I think in life, we come of age and we have these moments where you’re in a transition phase and then you’re way beyond that. I think in the Black Widow movie, the character where we meet him is in a real moment of crisis. Throughout the movie, by facing herself in many ways and many things that make her who she is, she really goes through that crisis on the other side and can reestablish herself in that space where she is a more complete person and her own person.”, he stressed.
